The Employable PhD: Preparing your Students and Postdocs for Industry Careers

ORAL

Abstract

PhD students and postdocs are very aware of the career statistics. They realize that only 5%-10% of graduates will ultimately secure a permanent academic position. Social media is full of stories of PhDs struggling to convince industry hiring managers that they can be a valuable contributor to their team.

This presents a challenging situation for faculty who have only spent time in an academic setting. Can a professor who has no industry experience prepare their students to transition effectively into the private sector?

The answer is yes.

In this 45-minute session, I'll share the framework I've developed over 25 years in industry—the same system that I’ve taught to thousands of PhDs—so that you can begin helping your own students and postdocs stand out to hiring managers and get exciting industry jobs that they love.

You will walk away with the following:

- An industry hiring manager’s view of the career limitations most PhDs face when they transition into the private sector

- A full outline of the critical Industry Mindset that turn scientists into influential industry leaders

- A 5-step process you can teach your students for designing a career path aligned with their specific strengths (not generic “job search” advice)

- Four creative ideas that a PI or Physics Department can implement to begin preparing their graduate students and postdocs for the industry careers that most will have.

- A proven method for keeping graduates engaged with your department long after they’ve graduated.

Participants leave with a five-step plan for preparing the early-career scientists on their team to become versatile and influential members of an industry team
