Community Discussion on Materials That Learn, a Workshop by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine

ANCILLARYEVENT · EVW-BB42 · ID: EVW-BB42

On October 2 the National Academies’ Condensed Matter and Materials Research Committee (CMMRC) hosted its annual workshop on “Materials That Learn”. This 90-minute follow-on event at the APS Global Summit is to (1) highlight for the APS community key takeaways from the workshop—reviewing what is currently limiting progress in this area and discussing how discoveries in this field impact other disciplines—and (2) discuss a Call to Action on how to best advance this emerging field. How might the communities that support “Materials That Learn” be better tied together? How can a community be built that is more aware of each other’s work? Possibilities may include:

  • Targeted resources for developing materials that can accommodate learning rules
  • Connecting or merging topics at professional conferences
  • Joint requests for articles or white papers
  • Cross-disciplinary town halls or events
  • Other cross-community engagement
  • Additional ideas?

Session Agenda

  • 7:00 pm – Kickoff, Introduction to National Academies and role of CMMRC
  • 7:05 pm – Motivation, Summary, and Outcomes for Materials That Learn workshop
  • 7:30 pm – Q&A Discussion and Call to Action
  • 8:30 pm – Session concludes

Additional Background Information: The CMMRC is a standing committee that holds annual day-long workshops that focus on emerging topics of importance to the condensed matter and materials research community. This CMMRC follow-up activity is being planned due to interest in continuing community conversations after the CMMRC’s annual workshops which are sponsored by NSF and DOE.
