Navigating Academia and Life as International Students
ORAL · Invited
Abstract
Graduate school is a period of intense academic growth, but for international students it also becomes a profound personal transition. Arriving in a new country means learning to navigate unfamiliar systems and expectations while simultaneously adapting to a different cultural and social environment. This transition happens alongside the demands of coursework, research, teaching responsibilities, and administrative requirements. Moreover, the cultural differences can make it difficult to form a sense of community and can hinder the process of building a support system in this new environment. This is further compounded by the uncertainty surrounding future academic or professional opportunities, which often prevents international students from making any long-term plans.
In this talk, I will draw on both my own experiences and those of peers to discuss the challenges of adapting to life and graduate school in a new country. I will address the hurdles that international students often face, the importance of building a sustainable work-life balance that truly works for you, which includes prioritizing physical and mental health and fostering connections that provide support, and ways to stay connected with the culture and festivities we cherish back home. By reflecting on the challenges and the lessons learned, my goal is to provide insight into the realities faced by many international students and to share strategies that may help ease the transition for others embarking on similar journeys.
