Weather and Climate Research at National Laboratories: Benefits to Science and Society
ORAL · Invited
Abstract
The national science laboratories in the USA have played an outsize role in advancing weather and climate science over the last half century, both in developing the tools we use and in the discoveries made. For example, the General Circulation Models developed at these labs have enabled quantitative predictions of the future climate to be made, classes of organized tropical weather systems were first identified at the labs, and the development of Lidar (now commonly used in robo-taxis like Waymo) was accelerated through its early use and development for cloud observations. In this talk I'll discuss a small sample of these contributions, and how they have advanced science and benefitted society.
