The use of metaphor inside and outside the laboratory: the story of science.

The use of rhetorical devices—such as metaphor, analogy, and simile—plays a vital role in the communication and public understanding of scientific discoveries. Drawing on examples from the history and philosophy of physics, I will argue that storytelling positively influences both the perception and funding of scientific research. Enhancing scientists' storytelling abilities can, in turn, improve scientific literacy across society. In particular, metaphors—whether in popular science or academic literature—can either clarify or obscure the phenomena they aim to describe. I will also highlight the recent resurgence of science poetry, as evidenced by the growing number of publications and journal submissions dedicated to the topic.
