Degendering Physics: Why So Slow?

ORAL

Abstract

It has been over a quarter of a century since attention has been drawn to the evidence that the over-representation of men in the physics enterprise is significant and global, though to varying degrees, and is due to societal patriarchy leaching into academia which then results in gender-based discrimination within. Progress has been slow, however. Some examples suggest that the slowness is because several mitigative interventions seek to address only the symptoms and are themselves moulded by patriarchy. It will be argued that it is important to step away from the all-too-common "Fixing-the-women" approach. Instead, the focus needs to be on discerning and addressing the root causes of gender inequity. Some examples that seek to address these systemic problems will be discussed.
