10,000 Einsteins: AI and the Future of Physics

ORAL  · Invited

Abstract

Machine learning tools are now achieving superhuman performance across an ever-widening array of domains. In physics, large language models already rival the capabilities of strong undergraduate students and in many ways currently act like excellent and capable graduate student researchers. As artificial intelligence continues to improve, the role of human scientists in research will have to evolve accordingly. In addition, artificial intelligence is strongly changing the way students learn and therefore the role of a physics instructor will have to evolve as well. This talk will give some perspective on these issues, surveying current trends and looking towards the future.
