Some Simple Calculations in the Developmemt of String Theory

ORAL  · Invited

Abstract

I shall sketch the development of string thiory from hadron phenomenology to superstrings, Along the way,  I shall describe several relatively elementary calculations that highlight some of the important steps. Collaborators and I were involved in many of these examples and/or in the progress they inspired. These calculations will include (1) the relation of the central charge of the Virasoro algebra to the dimension of spacetime; (2) definition of physical states,; (3) null physical states; (4) determination of the critical dimension; (5) quantun dynanics of string on the light cone; and (6) early hints of the important role of target space supersymmetry plays in string theory. I shall close with a brief discussion of string bits in the context of a ``holographic'' description of string theory..
