Harnessing Coherence from Incoherent Radiation with Guided Wave Metastructures

ORAL  · Invited

Abstract

Thermal radiation and luminescence emission are normally pictured as arising from the collective action of mutually incoherent sources of dipole radiation. However, by coupling thermal and

luminescent emission to waveguide structures and surface-propagating modes, we can achieve considerable control over the angular and spectral properties of radiation. I will discuss several examples, including i) reciprocity-breaking in magneto-electric semiconductors and Weyl semimetals, ii) thermal beaming from surface plasmon-coupled resonators, and iii) optical concentration in external luminescent solar concentrators.
