The Simons Observatory: Time Domain Pipeline and Transient Science

Poster-In-person

Abstract

The Simons Observatory (SO) is a next generation Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiment located in the Atacama desert in Chile. The SO Large Aperture Telescope (LAT) recently achieved first light, has started Initial Science Observations (ISO) and will begin nominal observations soon. The LAT will be sensitive to numerous transient phenominal, including active galactic nuclei (AGN) variability, energetic events such as gamma ray bursts (GRBs), and even moving solar system bodies such as asteroids. To take advantage of this rich source of science, the SO team is developing an automated pipeline for detecting transient events, monitoring known transients, and making light curves for objects of interest. This poster will cover some of the technical aspects of the transient pipeline, as well as some of the science cases SO will shed light on.
