Outreach, Education, and Communication Highlights from the Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center

ORAL

Abstract

The Wisconsin IceCube Particle Astrophysics Center is home to six particle astrophysics research projects, including the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. These projects have innate emotional appeal due to their extreme locations and pioneering science, but translating this often unfamiliar science into accessible language and activities is a challenge. We present examples of recent successful education, outreach, and communication activities showcasing how the WIPAC education and outreach team leverages opportunities, in-house science expertise, and external relationships to promote science to the general public. Highlights of this talk will include an astronomy-themed game and other educational activities, research talks at local pubs, breweries, and bars, and explanatory social media video clips featuring graduate students doing cutting-edge research.
