Designing a multiphase high-impact Science on Tap program for simple deployability

ORAL

Abstract

Science on Tap! (SoT!) is a well-established informal education program designed to uniquely communicate science. It has been implemented in multiple formats and locations throughout the country with the goal to publicly discuss cutting-edge research topics in a relaxed setting that is both educational and entertaining. We have established a version of this outreach program that is impactful for the audience while also having a low entry barrier for the scientific outreachers. Our format was generated by reviewing other SoT! programs, studying popular entertainment formats, and considering the challenges that scientific outreachers commonly face. We were able to engineer a multiphase format by creating multiple small events strung together as a cohesive unit that can be set up piecewise for easy reproduction. The phase transitions allow space for humor and interaction with the host business. In this presentation, we will discuss our format, how it can be effectively deployed elsewhere, and preliminary feedback we have from the audience and outreachers.
