Students as Satellites: Connecting the Next Global Generation of Physics
ORAL · Invited
Abstract
Modern physics is asking for ever more team effort and international collaboration. We obviously need global connections between scientists, but when is the right time to start "connecting"? Just as satellites link distant parts of our planet, students can serve as crucial links for the future of physics. This talk will showcase personal experiences connecting students in the global world of physics, but also in the local community that enabled it.
During his studies at the University of Belgrade, Zlatan has served in various leadership positions, most notably as the Vice Dean for Student Affairs and as the APS Student Ambassador. Starting almost from scratch, he led a years-long effort to revive local student organizations and build their international connections. Students have since become more involved both locally and internationally, frequently participating in conferences, exchanges, and other events, even taking on international leadership roles. As a highlight, a student initiative resulted in a successful satellite event for the Global Physics Summit 2025, organized for the first time in Serbia.
Ultimately, the work on international collaboration never ends. Graduate students serve an important role in this process as role models for their younger colleagues. This talk aims to inspire current and future graduate students to be leaders and continue this work, becoming the next generation of "satellites" linking the physics world.
