Development of 4 K Cryocoolers: Enabling Technologies for Cryogen-Free Systems
ORAL · Invited
Abstract
Advances in 4 K cryocoolers have had a transformative impact on cryogenics by eliminating liquid helium in many applications. This talk reviews the historical development of 4 K cryocoolers and highlights the key technological milestones. Several refrigeration cycles capable of achieving temperatures below 4 K are discussed, with particular emphasis on the development of rare-earth regenerator materials and pulse tube cryocoolers. Recent advances in 4 K cryocooler technology are presented and compared. The talk also examines the breakthroughs associated with integrating 4 K pulse tube cryocoolers into dry dilution refrigerators.
