Abstract

Biobarriers are effective on removal of adsorbed trace contaminants from soils, in groundwater, if microorganisms on the support media are effective. This study aimed to isolate bacteria from different soils, then to attach a bacterial consortium on porous media developed by using natural zeolite, to develop economically feasible and sustainable biobarrier, for in-situ remediation applications. Manisa (Gördes) natural zeolite was used at column reactor experiment as the filter material. In order to determine the appropriate trace substance to be used in packed column, CaCl2, KCl and NaCl transport experiments were conducted. Wet method was used for biobarrier activation. Two volumes of the solution containing the microorganism consortium was transferred into column reactor and applied to a 24-hour waiting period to ensure that the surface to hold onto. Then made the first measurement of trace substances and biobarrier has been activated. Four experiments sets during the biobarrier studies was used. Three experiments sets was used as solution pH=7. One experiment set was used as add carbon source glucose (4 mg/l) and adjusted to pH=8.4. Endosulfan concentration of the solution used in biobarrier reactors 100μg / l. As a result of experiment, endosulfan treatment rate was %100. Zeolite was shown to be an effective biobarrier material
