The Applications of Stepper Motors in a CNC Knee Mill

Abstract

Computer numerical control (CNC) machines are necessary and standard machinery that is used in industries to cut and forge metal materials accurately. All CNC's are pre-programed with software and coding language that directly prompts the machine to cut pieces precisely. There are multiple applications and variations of CNC mills and lathes, however a CNC Direct Motion Knee Mill is a worktable that has a vertical cutting tool for metalwork. The Knee Mill used for this presentation was inoperable due to the lack of support from the software. To repurpose the CNC, electronics theory was used to create circuits, computer science skills to program a raspberry pi, and classical mechanics to derive the motions applied to the machine.
