Neutron Scattering Investigations of the Rare Earth Kagome Metal TbAgGe

Oral-In-person

Abstract

Materials with a Kagome lattice have high geometric frustration that leads to various phenomena. The rare earth intermetallic RTX family, R = rare earth, T = transition metal and X = p electron element, allows for the exploration of the interplay of crystal electric fields, hybridization of conduction and 4f electrons, and magnetic frustration, which have led to exotic ground states such as Kagome spin ice in HoAgGe, and a frustrated non-Fermi liquid state in YbAgGe. In the RAgGe family, the spin anisotropy changes from axial to planar depending on the identity of the rare earth ion, and there is a close competition between crystal fields and exchange interactions that generates complex magnetic phase diagrams. In this talk, I will present neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of TbAgGe. These results show the evolution of magnetic structures throughout the temperature and magnetic field phase diagram and provide insight into the crystal field and magnetic exchange energy scales.
