Lessons from Editing Wikipedia Biography Articles with Introductory Physics Students
ORAL
Abstract
I present student survey results, editing statistics, and lessons learned from two years of Wikipedia biography editing assignments with introductory physics students at a primarily undergraduate institution. These assignments have been structured in the form of edit-a-thons both (1) as a laboratory assignment and (2) as part of a university-wide day-long event. In each case, students are introduced to editing Wikipedia and asked to make small improvements to existing articles about notable women in physics. I discuss the evidence for both benefits and drawbacks of this type of one-off interaction with the platform and point toward opportunities for improvement.
