Science diplomacy through Astronomy: Celebrating our Common Humanity

The International Astronomical Union’s Office of Astronomy for Development (IAU OAD) advances the vision of “Astronomy for a Better World” by using astronomy as a tool to promote sustainable development and global collaboration. Among its thematic areas, Science Diplomacy through Astronomy: Celebrating Our Common Humanity highlights how astronomy can unite people across borders, cultures, and disciplines through a shared sense of curiosity and wonder about the universe. Astronomy inherently fosters international cooperation, its questions and discoveries belong to no single nation. Through this spirit of openness, the OAD supports initiatives that strengthen cross-border partnerships, encourage dialogue, and build trust between communities and countries. With over 230 projects across 112 countries and 11 regional offices and language centers, the OAD demonstrates how science can serve as a bridge for peace and mutual understanding.
