From Expertise to Influence: Women in Scientific Decision-Making.
ORAL
Abstract
Women remain underrepresented in scientific decision-making roles, particularly at the levels where research priorities, funding directions, and governance frameworks are shaped. Drawing on personal experience in scientific leadership and global science policy, this talk reflects on the pathways that lead women from scientific expertise into positions of influence, as well as the structural and cultural barriers that continue to limit equitable participation.
The presentation will explore key challenges faced by women in decision-making roles, including visibility, legitimacy, and access to strategic networks, alongside opportunities created through institutional reform, science diplomacy, and international cooperation. Particular attention will be given to the role of multilateral organizations in fostering inclusive leadership, enabling diverse voices in agenda-setting, and translating scientific excellence into societal impact.
The talk will conclude with practical reflections on strategies to strengthen gender equity in scientific governance, highlighting mentorship, policy frameworks, and systemic change as essential levers to ensure that women not only participate in science, but actively shape its future.
