BYOD – Promoting the Use of Student Devices in the Classroom

ORAL

Abstract

What is the best way to enable students to use the electronic devices they already have in courses while still fulfilling learning objectives and maintaining convenience? This bring-your-own-device (BYOD) model of giving students access to computing resources is contrasted with a computer-lab model or a model that forgoes the use of computing resources. The advantages of the BYOD model will be presented while still recognizing that it can present some challenges depending on how instructors use devices in their classrooms. Specific options will be discussed of how to mitigate the challenges so that student devices can be effectively used.
