Physics to the Core™:  Empowering K-6 Educator Efficacy Through Concept-Driven, Interdisciplinary Physics Instruction

ORAL

Abstract

Physics to the Core™ (PTTC) is a transformative K–6 instructional framework that positions physics as the central organizing principle for teaching all core subjects. By integrating Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) across science, mathematics, language arts, history–social science, physical education, and the visual and performing arts, PTTC redefines elementary education as an interconnected, concept-driven learning experience. The framework is anchored in 25 foundational physics concepts, scaled developmentally for each grade, that serve as the scaffolding for a flexible lesson plan model. In alignment with the Q-12 Partnership, PTTC contributes to strengthening the national and global physics pipeline by building a strong foundation in the earliest years of formal education.

By focusing on K–6 classrooms, PTTC addresses the critical gap in early physics education:

  • Strengthens teacher confidence in teaching physics concepts.

Promotes equitable access to science and interdisciplinary learning.

Enables students to develop foundational reasoning and problem-solving skills.

Prepares young learners for success in science and beyond, while laying the groundwork for lifelong engagement in STEM fields.

The presentation is designed for K–6 educators to:

  • Experience PTTC’s teacher-centered instructional model.

Practice integrating physics concepts into cross-curricular lessons.

Use tools such as anchor charts, demonstration guides, lesson templates, and formative assessment strategies.

By centering teacher development, Physics to the Core™ ensures that K–6 classrooms are transformed into spaces where physics thinking drives inquiry, engagement, and interdisciplinary learning. The framework is scalable, culturally adaptable, and positioned to have a global impact on education reform, advancing the shared goals of PTTC and the Q-12 Partnership.
