LGBT+ Studies in Physics Education: History, Current Research, and Navigating the New Lavender Scare

ORAL  · Invited

Abstract

LGBT+ Physicists have always, and will always exist. The history of queer physicists is inescapably bound to societal norms and trends, interweaving stories and experiences. This talk will explore the history of LGBT+ physicists and present a review of the LGBT+ studies work in PER over the last decade and a half. From the persecution of Alan Turing, to the firing of Frank Kameny as a govenrment astronomer, the stories of LGBT+ physicists are varied and compelling. However, they cannot be understood without considering the context in which they arose and a juxtaposition of activist efforts in the government and academia to the work of critical organizers such as Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. This talk will unpack this history and look towards recent LGBT+ work in physics including the LGBT+ Climate in Physics Survey, the recent social network analysis of the lives of women and LGBT+ physicists, and continued efforts to capture the experiences of this community within physics education.
