Inquiry-based Learning: what college professors can learn from grading AP exams

ORAL

Abstract

The curriuclum of AP physics (1 and 2) and typical 2-semester algebra-based college physics sequence are well alligned. Other than a faster pace for college physics, the philosophy, testing style and teaching style can be very different. AP physics focuses more on inquiry-based learning (IBL), which has become more common in college education. To make this student-centered, active learning method effecitve, the assessment approach needs to be adapted, also. In this talk, I will share what I learned when participated in grading AP exams about designing exam questions and building grading rubrics to refelct the learning objectives of IBL for non-physics major students.
